Kansas City Residential Solar

2026 Buyer’s Guide

Prepared for Alex. A plain-language look at what rooftop solar costs in Kansas City, which installers are worth a quote, and how interconnection through Evergy actually works - so you can compare offers on the same basis and know what to verify in writing before you sign.

Before you read

This is research, not legal, tax, engineering, or financial advice. Every price, warranty term, and policy point below should be verified in writing with the installer and your utility before you commit. Quotes shown are illustrative, not offers.

Start with the executive summary
01

Executive summary

Kansas City straddles the Missouri-Kansas line, so a rooftop solar decision starts with two questions that are easy to get wrong: what the going rate is, and which utility rules apply to your address. This report pulls together the public pricing picture, three installer candidates, and the interconnection steps you will actually hit, so you can compare quotes on the same basis and know what to verify in writing before you sign.

  • Average installed price in Jackson County, MO is about $2.61/W (EnergySage, updated Aug 21, 2026). A typical 10.34 kW system runs about $26,951 before incentives, with a range of roughly $22,908 to $30,994.
  • Three installers are shortlisted: The Solar Guys, Good Energy Solutions, and Astrawatt / ION Solar.
  • Recommendation: The Solar Guys first for service and reputation; Good Energy Solutions as a strong alternative for longevity and engineering depth; Astrawatt / ION only with enhanced diligence.
  • Get three comparable cash quotes, and a fourth from an independent local installer if you can. Choose on total installed price, production assumptions, warranty documents, Evergy process ownership, and references - not sales claims.
02

The bottom line

If you only take one thing from this report: no installer wins on reputation alone. The three below are ranked by the strength of the evidence we could verify, with the watch-outs that matter most for a Kansas City homeowner.

Best for service & reputation

The Solar Guys

Strongest independently visible review signal (EnergySage 5.0/5 from 42 reviews, Elite Installer, Installer of the Year 2026), all in-house crews, and an unusually broad 25-year workmanship scope covering panels, inverters, roof penetrations, and labor.

Best for longevity & engineering depth

Good Energy Solutions

Longest operating history of the shortlisted locals (founded 2007), NABCEP-certified professionals, and a broad premium equipment ecosystem. A strong alternative if its written workmanship term is competitive.

Consider only with diligence

Astrawatt / ION Solar

Conflicting review signals across platforms and a contract entity that must be verified before any quote is treated as comparable. Worth obtaining only with local references, exact warranty documents, and financing terms.

What this means for your quote

For standard grid-tied residential work in Kansas City, roughly $2.20 to $3.00 per watt is the competitive-to-premium band, depending on roof, electrical work, equipment, storage, and financing. A battery is usually priced separately and can materially raise the total, so ask for it apples-to-apples.

Sample math

8 kW x $2.61/W = $20,880 before incentives

Illustrative only - not a quote. Your actual price depends on the site, equipment, and financing.

  • Lease or PPA escalator rate
  • Battery usable kWh and continuous kW
  • Production guarantee and assumptions
04

The shortlist

Three candidates, each with what the public record supports and what still needs to be verified in writing.

The Solar Guys

Established 2012

Pros

  • Strongest independently visible review signal: EnergySage 5.0/5 from 42 reviews, Elite Installer, and Installer of the Year 2026.
  • All installs in-house with no subcontractors; licensed electrical contractor.
  • Unusually broad 25-year warranty covering panels, inverters, roof penetrations, and workmanship.
  • Enphase Certified Platinum and REC ProTrust Certified; Enphase and LG Solar partners.
  • Services include installation, financing, electrical contracting, and repair and maintenance.

Cons & watch-outs

  • Equipment model, battery details, and pricing are quote-specific.
  • Verify LG and Enphase availability and whether warranties transfer.

A broader web result showed their own site claiming 1,290 reviews. Treat that as self-reported, not independently comparable.

Good Energy Solutions

Founded in 2007 by Kevin and Shana Good; locally owned and operated with in-house design, install, and service. NABCEP-certified professionals, electrical license BC-24509, and partners across REC, Enphase, Tesla, Briggs & Stratton, Franklin, and Maxeon. Up to 40-year product warranties on select panels. EnergySage rating 4.8/5 from 20 reviews, Approved Installer. EnergySage profile.

Pros

  • Longest operating history of the shortlisted locals.
  • Engineering and craftsmanship orientation with NABCEP depth.
  • Broad premium equipment ecosystem.
  • Strong reviews.

Cons & watch-outs

  • Premium pricing is likely.
  • Reviews include a positive long-term service story but also complaints about support and area licensing, plus a manufacturer-bankruptcy support issue - treat these as anecdotal, not proven systemic.
  • The profile describes a regional-best workmanship warranty but does not state a numeric term on the extracted page. Get the exact term, exclusions, labor, roof penetrations, monitoring, and transferability in the contract.
  • Confirm who performs the work in your municipality.

Astrawatt Solar / ION Solar

Included as a comparison and alternate, with transparent reputation risk. A Google Maps result for Astrawatt Kansas City showed 4.7/5 from 243 reviews at 3525 Roanoke Rd Ste 110, Kansas City MO, described as trusted since 2015 and locally operated. Google Maps listing. EnergySage lists Astrawatt as a KC solar, storage, EV charging, and smart panel company since 2016. EnergySage profile.

Third-party results are mixed: Trustpilot 3.2/5 from 74 reviews (Trustpilot), ConsumerAffairs 1.1/5 from 7 reviews (ConsumerAffairs), and Yelp 2.0/5 from 9 reviews (Yelp). Review-platform selection bias and possible branch or period differences mean these should not be averaged into a single score.

If you pursue a quote from Astrawatt / ION

Do not assume ION Solar is the same legal entity as Astrawatt; the contracting identity must be verified. Require local references, exact warranty documents, a service escalation path, and financing or lien terms in writing before treating any quote as comparable.

Interconnection & Evergy

Evergy’s official page says rooftop solar and battery systems can export excess power through a special net meter for a bill credit. Get several quotes, submit the appropriate application for projects under 200 kW or over 200 kW, install within 12 months of approval, request the meter set after installation, and remain on the default plan or choose an optional time-based plan. Evergy also states it is not affiliated with door-to-door solar salespeople. Contact 816-242-5971. Evergy source.

Missouri vs Kansas - know which rules apply

Kansas City crosses state and utility lines. Confirm whether your service is Evergy Missouri Metro, Evergy Kansas Metro, or another utility. Interconnection rules, export credit, valuation, fixed charges, and rate plans differ between them. Do not assume 1:1 net metering; credits and their valuation depend on the applicable tariff and customer class - confirm the current tariff in writing. The Kansas Corporation Commission publishes net-metering details as a further official source.

Interconnection checklist

  • Application approved before install
  • One-line diagram and system design
  • PTO / meter set after install
  • Export credit and its valuation
  • Rollover / true-up rules
  • System-size cap for your tariff
  • Battery anti-islanding requirements
  • Who handles the utility paperwork

Equipment that matters

Brand names get the attention, but the terms on the equipment - and who stands behind it - are what protect you. Only brands sourced above are named; everything else is quote-dependent.

08

Warranty & contract due diligence

A warranty is only as good as the paper behind it. Separate the layers below and get each in writing.

  • Manufacturer product and performance warranty
  • Inverter and battery warranty
  • Installer workmanship and roof-penetration warranty
  • Monitoring warranty
  • Production guarantee
  • Roof removal and reinstall coverage

Read the fine print on these

A warranty can be voided or complicated by installer closure or manufacturer bankruptcy. Require labor and shipping coverage, the named claim owner, a response SLA, assignment on home sale, and a clear list of exclusions.

09

Decision tree

A simple path from “thinking about it” to “signed.”

1

Confirm your utility and tariff (Evergy Missouri Metro, Evergy Kansas Metro, or other).

2

Get three comparable cash quotes from the shortlist, plus a fourth from an independent local installer if possible.

3

Compare on total installed price, production assumptions, equipment and warranty documents, and Evergy process ownership.

4

Verify every claim in writing - warranty terms, financing and lien terms, and who handles utility paperwork.

5

Submit the interconnection application before install, install within 12 months of approval, and request the meter set after.

6

Refresh this report before you sign - policy, tariffs, and product availability change.
